How to make your iPhone a dumb phone (2026)

You don't need a second phone to get the calm of a dumb phone. Six settings in iOS get you most of the way, in about fifteen minutes. Everything here is reversible.

1. Strip the Home Screen to one page

  1. Touch and hold an empty spot on the Home Screen until the icons jiggle.
  2. Tap the page dots above the dock, then untick every page except one.
  3. On the page you kept, hold each app you don't need daily and choose Remove App, then Remove from Home Screen. It stays in the App Library.
  4. Empty the dock the same way, or keep only Phone and Messages.

2. Send new apps to the App Library

Settings, Home Screen & App Library, then choose App Library Only under Newly Downloaded Apps. New apps stop appearing on your clean page.

3. Turn on grayscale

Settings, Accessibility, Display & Text Size, Color Filters, then turn on Color Filters and pick Grayscale. To switch it on and off quickly, set it as the Accessibility Shortcut (Settings, Accessibility, Accessibility Shortcut) and triple-click the side button.

4. Cut notifications to people

Settings, Notifications. Turn notifications off for every app that isn't a person talking to you. For the rest, use Scheduled Summary to get them twice a day instead of all day.

5. Set app limits and Downtime

Settings, Screen Time, App Limits: add a daily limit for social and video apps. Downtime blocks everything except the apps you allow during the hours you choose, such as 9 pm to 7 am.

6. Make a Focus for evenings

Settings, Focus, then add a Personal or custom Focus. Allow only the people who matter, choose your one clean Home Screen page for it, and schedule it for evenings and weekends.

Where this falls short

Built-in settings hide the noise, but the App Library and Search are still one swipe away, and Screen Time limits are easy to wave off with "Ignore Limit". That gap is what dumb phone apps try to close.

Do it with Unphone

Unphone puts the steps above into one app: your Home Screen becomes a plain list of tools, the tools themselves are text-only (calls, directions, lists, timer), and the apps you choose sit behind an eight-second breathing pause. It arrives on the App Store in November 2026. Get one email at launch.

Questions

Can I make my iPhone a dumb phone without buying a new phone?

Yes. Hide your extra Home Screen pages, keep only a few tools on one page, turn on grayscale, silence most notifications and set Screen Time limits. It takes about fifteen minutes and you keep the camera, maps and banking you still need.

Will I lose my apps?

No. Removing an app from the Home Screen keeps it in the App Library. Hidden Home Screen pages come back when you tick them again.

Is a dumb phone app better than a Light Phone or a Brick?

They solve different problems. A second phone like the Light Phone is the strongest wall but costs several hundred dollars and drops apps you may need. A Brick is a physical tag that locks apps when you tap it. An app such as Unphone changes how the iPhone you already have looks and behaves, for the price of a subscription.

Does grayscale actually help?

Many people find colorless screens less tempting to scroll. It costs nothing to try: Settings, Accessibility, Display & Text Size, Color Filters, Grayscale.
